TOP DOG always needs volunteers to serve in several areas: as Board members, fund raisers, and Training Assistants (TAs) to the clients. The TA volunteers attend a training course prior to being assigned to a TOP DOG client. The TA training course covers the basics of canine behavior, psychology, and service dog training, plus basic information on many types of disabilities. After finishing the training course, a TA is assigned to a client for whom they act as coach, mentor, and advisor. The Training Assistants attend Saturday morning classes with their clients, and meet with them at least once during the week. The time of the weekday meetings is at the client's and TA's discretion. TAs do none of the hands-on training -- that is the exclusive domain of TOP DOG's clients -- but they are there to lean on if a client needs help or advice concerning training. TAs and clients often find themselves putting their heads together to come up with innovative solutions to unique problems! A strong three way bond is usually formed - client/dog/TA. There is great pride when the team becomes certified.
