Start a Training Program

Have you thought about starting a dog training program that includes teaching people with physical disabilities to train their own dogs? Do you have the desire, the drive, but you're not sure how to get started? Well, TOP DOG has been doing it, and doing it well, for over fifteen years and now we have put together a manual that covers our entire training operation. This manual is designed for people who wish to start a program similar to TOP DOG. It contains all of our training program, including how we recruit and train volunteers, how we select clients, sample forms, our lesson plans and articles to help illustrate the concepts.

Excerpts from How to Start a Service Dog Training Program:
"At TOP DOG our philosophy is that the person with the disability can be taught to do nearly 100 percent of the dog training. In order to teach the client to train his or her dog, it's necessary to teach some basic understanding of canine behavior. The idea is to create a team, person and dog, working together and understanding one another. Many people have no concept of how a dog thinks or feels, what his general needs are, and what it takes to live and work together. By hearing a series of lectures and being given articles on various topics, the client comes to understand much more about his or her dog, and therefore, is able to recognize and solve problems, anticipate and overcome future obstacles, and train in a gentle manner, using positive reinforcement."

"Please feel free to use any or all of the ideas contained in this manual. It has been put together to help anyone who wishes to start a service dog training program. Hopefully the ideas contained herein will supplement your own concepts, and stimulate new thoughts and ideas."

The price of the Training Program is $300. That is very inexpensive for all the forms and other materials to either start a program or just to help you teach classes.

FAQ:

Does this publication provide instruction on how to train a service dog?

No. We presume you already have competent trainers. Our training methods are taught in the TEAMWORK books & videos.

Does this manual explain how to set up a non-profit organization?

No. Most of this manual deals with the outline and structure of our actual program, including lesson plans for each class, teaching articles handed out to students, etc. We do, however, include the names of some books, tapes, etc. that can help you get the business end of your program up and running.

Does this manual explain each class?

Yes. This manual is our entire training program. Each class has a lecture or theme and exercises that are taught in a specific order. We also supplement our training with written articles that are specific to that week's lesson. All of this, including the hand-out articles are included in the manual.
